Why lighter could be brighter for Volkswagen-powered WTCR racers
Volkswagen Motorsport head Sven Smeets is hoping the lighter Volkswagen Golf GTI TCRs competing at WTCR Race of Netherlands this weekend will lead to brighter prospects for drivers Mehdi Bennani, Rob Huff, Johan Kristoffersson and Benjamin Leuchter.
The Sébastien Loeb Racing-run cars will carry 30 kilograms less compensation weight than they did at WTCR Race of Slovakia last weekend, resulting in a total weight of 1265kg. And following a tough start to this season’s WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO, the weight break could be just the boost the Golf-driving quartet need.
“Last year, we had some good results in Zandvoort, but in 2019 the cards have been reshuffled,” said Smeets. “The intensity of competition has increased enormously once again in comparison to 2018.
“Rob Huff’s fifth place in Slovakia was a real accomplishment. Now we must look to take the next step in the right direction. The lower weight of our cars will hopefully work in our favour.”
